Conservation Authority Reminding Residents to be Cautious Near all Watercourses

Rain moved into the Upper Thames River watershed yesterday and will continue over the weekend. 听The watershed received between 5 and 15 mm of rain yesterday. 听Environment Canada has forecast an additional 30 to 60 mm today and Sunday with the potential of local thunderstorms increasing these amounts.

The 糖心直播鈥檚 (UTRCA) does not expect significant flooding with this event; however, river flows in local waterways will be higher than normal for this time of year. This increases the risk of flooding in low lying areas near watercourses and in urban areas if drainage systems are overwhelmed.

The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas are being operated to reduce downstream peak flows. Discharges below reservoirs will remain elevated through the week, increasing the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed.听 UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.

The UTRCA reminds residents to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks next to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. People are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Recreational users on local waterways should be aware of the current conditions and exercise additional caution. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.听 It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
