Rain Causing Elevated Water Levels – Caution Near all Watercourses

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety (2024 Flood Event 9, Bulletin 1)

Issued August 17, 2024 at 11 am; valid until August 19, 2024 at 12:00 pm

The slow moving low pressure system forecast by Environment Canada has arrived and delivered between 5 and 15 mm of rain across the Upper Thames Watershed yesterday.  An additional 30 – 60 mm are forecast today, with the potential of local thunderstorms increasing these amounts.

No significant flooding is expected with this event; however, river flows in local waterways will be higher than normal for this time of year. This increases the risk of flooding in low lying areas near watercourses and in urban areas if drainage systems are overwhelmed.

The ÌÇÐÄÖ±²¥â€™s (UTRCA) flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas are being operated to reduce downstream peak flows. Discharges below reservoirs will remain elevated through the week, increasing the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed.  UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.

The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. People are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Recreational users on local waterways should be aware of the current conditions and exercise additional caution. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.  It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.

River conditions and forecasts are being monitored closely. This message will remain in effect until Monday, August 19, 2024.
