Watershed responding to this morning鈥檚 rain

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety (update) (2024 Flood Event 7, Bulletin 2)

Issued July 16, 2024 at 12:00 pm; Valid until July 19, 2024

Heavy rain moved across the Upper Thames River watershed this morning, triggering a Rainfall Warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada. The system resulted in areas north of London receiving 30-60 mm, while the rest of the watershed received much less. The warning has now ended.

The Upper Thames River basin has now received 75-170 mm of rain over the past week. The ground is saturated and not able to absorb runoff. Watercourses across the watershed remain elevated from yesterday鈥檚 rain.聽Watercourses in the North Thames watershed downstream of St Marys are expected to rise due to this morning鈥檚 rain and potentially spill over bank into low lying areas, similar to last week.

The 糖心直播 (UTRCA) continues to operate its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce downstream peak flows. Discharges below the reservoirs will remain elevated through the week. UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.

Parents and guardians are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses and out of any flooded areas. The water is fast-moving and high, and streambanks are soft and slippery. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
