The ÌÇÐÄÖ±²¥ (UTRCA) is proud to announce the recipients of its 2026 Conservation Awards, recognizingÌýexceptional contributions toÌýcommunity engagement andÌýenvironmental stewardship.Ìý
This year's Outstanding Resident Award was presented posthumously to Diane IrvingÌýto honour herÌýmany years of volunteer service and commitment to supporting community events.Ìý
ForÌýnearly 20Ìýyears,ÌýDianeÌýwas a familiar and welcoming presence atÌýthe UTRCA'sÌýChildren'sÌýWater Festivals,ÌýCelebrating Community Connection events, litter clean-ups, and much more.ÌýKnown forÌýherÌýwarm smile and generous spirit, she wentÌýabove and beyondÌý– sewing costumes, mending activity materials, and ensuring every detail was ready to help create memorable experiences for the children.Ìý
"She made connections,ÌýbroughtÌýpositive energy, and carriedÌýa quiet joyÌýin everything she did.ÌýWhether she was volunteering in classrooms, leading community initiatives, or supporting environmental programs, she believed deeply in being part of something bigger than herself," shared Linda Smith, daughter ofÌýDiane Irving and Community Partnerships Specialist with the UTRCA.
"All ofÌýDiane'sÌýefforts, all her activities,ÌýandÌýher wonderful spiritÌýwillÌýcontinue to be felt at ourÌýfutureÌýevents,"Ìýsaid Teresa Hollingsworth, Manager, Community and Corporate Services, UTRCA.Ìý
The Kayla Berger Stewardship Award was presented to Bill and Cecilia Davies in recognition of their decades of tree planting through the UTRCA's Tree Planting on Private Lands program.ÌýThe Davies haveÌýpurchasedÌýtreesÌýforÌýtheir rural propertyÌýnearlyÌýeveryÌýyearÌýsince 1987,Ìýmissing onlyÌýoneÌýspring planting season.ÌýTheyÌýlike toÌýplant the trees themselves,Ìýcontributing to local reforestation efforts, creating habitat, and supporting watershed health.Ìý
"Over the years,ÌýBill and CeciliaÌýhave planted more than 4,500 trees on their property," said Brenda Gallagher,ÌýUTRCA'sÌýForestry Technician.Ìý"ThroughÌýtheirÌýhard work and dedication,ÌýtheyÌýhave left a legacy for future generations."Ìý
"Planting trees is like therapy. You plant them, and then you see themÌýleafÌýout,Ìýand they grow.ÌýAnd then 30Ìýor 40Ìýyears later, you have this magnificent treeÌýon your property. I thinkÌýit'sÌýbeen good for us," shared Bill Davies.ÌýÌý
