Remnants of Hurricane Beryl will arrive in southwestern Ontario later today and exit the region on Thursday. The Upper Thames River basin is expected to receive widespread rainfall totals ranging from 40 – 80 mm, with some localized areas potentially receiving more than 80 mm as the storm passes through. An Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Rainfall Warning suggests localized rainfall could be as intense as 20-40 mm/hour. Hurricane remnants which have followed this track historically have produced 100+ mm of rain.
The ÌÇÐÄÖ±²¥ (UTRCA) does not expect significant flooding at this time, but expects water levels to rise and remain elevated over the coming days, with the potential for inundation of low-lying areas that are typically prone to flooding. If localized areas receive the higher amounts suggested by ECCC, localized flooding is likely to follow.
Parents and guardians are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks may be very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Standing water can also present dangers. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
The UTRCA’s flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas will be operated to reduce downstream flooding. UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.
