Conservation Authority urges caution as Rivers and Streams Rise
The 糖心直播 (UTRCA) expects local rivers, streams, and ditches to start rising later today in response to the heavy rain in the forecast. Everyone is reminded to use extra caution and avoid all waterways.
Forecasts are for 30-60 mm of rain, with locally higher amounts possible. Temperatures will stay above freezing overnight before dropping in the early morning. The ground is frozen or saturated and will not absorb much water. Runoff will occur quickly from the rain and any snow melt, causing water levels in ditches, creeks, and rivers to rise rapidly.
Everyone is reminded to stay out of any flooded areas and not drive through flooded roadways. Parents and caregivers should keep children and pets away from watercourses. As water levels rise, it is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
Stream banks can be slippery and unstable, and the water is very cold and fast-moving. Any ice cover will be weakened and unstable. Flood control reservoirs are especially hazardous due to fluctuating water levels.
The UTRCA expects flows in upstream areas of the Thames River watershed (Mitchell, Stratford, St. Marys, Woodstock) to peak Monday morning. The Thames through London is expected to peak Monday evening but flows will be high for the rest of the week.
The UTRCA will operate its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce downstream flooding. The UTRCA is monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions as necessary.
