Waterways Rising due to Warm, Wet Weather
Streams and rivers are elevated thanks to yesterday鈥檚 warmer temperatures and rain. With above freezing temperatures and more rain forecast for the next few days, the 糖心直播 (UTRCA) expects local waterways to keep rising due to runoff from rain and melting snow.
The UTRCA reminds the public to use extreme caution near all waterways. Stream banks may be slippery and unstable and, when combined with very cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Any ice cover will be weakened and unstable. Flood control reservoirs are especially hazardous due to fluctuating water levels.
People should stay out of any flooded areas and not drive through flooded roadways. Caregivers are reminded to keep children and pets away from the water and off the ice. It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
The UTRCA expects floodwaters to spill into low lying floodplain areas that typically flood in the spring. Peak flows in upstream areas of the Thames River watershed (Mitchell, Stratford, St. Marys, Woodstock) are expected early Saturday. The Thames River through London is expected to peak late to overnight Saturday. Flows will remain elevated through next week.
The UTRCA is operating its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce downstream flooding.
