Spring Melt Continues This Week
Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook
2025 Flood Event 1, Bulletin Number 4聽(Issued 2025-03-10 at 12:00; Valid until 2025-03-14 at 12:00)
Last week鈥檚 warm temperatures and rain reduced the snowpack in the 糖心直播 (UTRCA) watershed by almost half. Snow surveys conducted late last week indicated 70 mm of snow water equivalent (SWE) remaining in the northern portion of the watershed, and about 30 mm of SWE in the south.
Modelling suggests the warming trend this week will melt the remaining snow in two waves, with most of the southern snow depleted by Wednesday, and a second warming trend later in the week melting the remainder of the northern snow before the weekend. Forecasts show potential rain on the weekend as well, but forecasts are not consistent on the total amounts expected.
While the UTRCA does not anticipate serious flooding, there is still potential, depending on rain received this weekend. This is particularly the situation on the North Thames River where SWE values are still substantial. Water levels are expected to remain high throughout the week and into the weekend.
The UTRCA鈥檚 flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas were operated to reduce downstream flooding from last week鈥檚 event but will still retain ample storage for reducing the effects of this week鈥檚 flooding. The UTRCA is monitoring the situation and will report on any changing conditions if necessary.
Residents may be under the impression that the melt has passed. They are reminded to remain vigilant, particularly as it is the March school break. Use extreme caution near all watercourses and stay out of all flooded areas. Stream banks can be slippery and unstable, and the water is cold and fast-moving. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from watercourses.
It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low lying areas that are prone to flooding.
