Dry Summer Allows for Easier Deep Water Measurements

Each year, 糖心直播 (UTRCA) staff survey local rivers and reservoirs using GPS equipment. These surveys help us understand the shape and depth of waterways, which is important for creating accurate flood models and managing water levels.听

This summer鈥檚 dry weather gave our survey team a rare chance to measure areas that are usually too deep. Using a flat-bottomed boat and a long survey pole, staff measured riverbed elevations along stretches of the North Thames River in London, Mitchell Reservoir, and upstream of the St. Marys dam. This information helps us build a better understanding of the water volume contained within our rivers and reservoirs to support flood management.听

Mini Forest at Fanshawe Conservation Area听

This June, the 糖心直播 (UTRCA) and London Environmental Network (LEN) began the process of planting a mini forest at Fanshawe Conservation Area. The first step in successfully planting a mini forest? Site preparation!听

With the help of dedicated staff and volunteers, UTRCA and LEN staff began the process of preparing the site to be planted this fall. Using a technique called sheet mulching, layers of cardboard, compost, and mulch were placed over the planting site. This process will kill the existing grass, decompose over the summer months, and result in healthy soil. This fall, volunteers will work to plant 250-300 native trees and shrubs at the site.

What is a mini forest?听

A mini forest is a community of native trees and shrubs planted closely together within an urban setting. The tree and shrub species planted in a mini forest are chosen based on their height and growing requirements, mimicking the multi-layered canopy of a natural forest. The mini forest site at Fanshawe Conservation Area will be utilized to showcase the positive effects of urban forestry.听Learn more about mini forests, .听听
